Toto Wolff has made some shocking statements. For the first time, the Mercedes team principal has spoken openly about who he wants to sign to replace Lewis Hamilton, who is leaving at the end of the year.
Wolff has thrown around four names, none of which are a real surprise, but rather the frankness with which he focuses on one of them:
"We have very interesting options. There's Kimi Antonelli, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, and of course there's Max Verstappen, whom we love more than anyone. It's a collaboration that has to happen at some point. It's just a question of when... But there's no denying it: he's our number one candidate alongside George Russell! But I don't want to rule out the others. Our main objective here is to be a top team and to be able to offer a truly competitive car that can attract these drivers. It's more about creating an effective team that is the golden mean on the road back to success, but of course as team principal you always want the best driver pairing in the field," said Wolff, who has effectively settled the "who is better, Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen" debate unintentionally...
Wolff: "We have to have a competitor at once."
