Since Alfa Romeo launched its first car, the industry and fans have been speculating whether Valtteri Bottas will return to Mercedes. Yes, but not in the way we've thought so far!
If former F1 driver and current insider Christian Fittipaldi's information is correct, Bottas could return as Toto Wolff's right-hand man, in a sort of mentor role. The right-hand man comparison isn't at all far-fetched, as according to Fittipaldi, Bottas will inherit the position from Jerome d'Ambrosio, who is leaving for Ferrari.
The significance of this for the Finn is well illustrated by the fact that d'Ambrosio was considered a serious candidate for the Mercedes team principal position following Wolff's retirement. He has also managed Mercedes on several occasions as a substitute. If the news is true, it could be great news for recent signing Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has an excellent relationship with the Finnish driver, and there could be no better supporter to help the rookie adapt than Valtteri Bottas.
